The Adventure . . .

With the week spent exploring the vast acreage of the Horseshoe Scout Reservation, the Mason-Dixon Adventure will provide a challenging, unique, educational (not to mention just plain fun) back-country camping experience for Venturers & Boy Scouts 13 years of age or older.

While developing proper back-country hiking and camping practices, youth will work on team building and leadership skills, working together during both activities & encampment.

Throughout a week of living off camp in the ‘HSR Wilderness’, Venturers & Scouts will learn about the history of Horseshoe Scout Reservation, Native Americans, the Mason-Dixon, colonial & pioneer customs, 1800’s forge & paper mills, Scouting in the early 1900’s, the unique eco-system of the Serpentine Barrens as well as current high adventure activities.

Daily activities might include conservation awareness, rock climbing, raft building, orienteering, land navigation, spar pole climbing, tomahawk throwing, black powder shooting, wilderness rescue and first aid, hiking, kayaking, COPE, structure climbing and rappelling . . . to name just a few.

Completion of the Mason-Dixon Adventure will be maximum preparation for hiking, camping, LNT and crew leadership; a great preparatory experience for Philmont, Northern Tier or The Summit. The Mason Dixon Adventure is the perfect preview to determine a youth’s or adult’s fitness level and zeal for the more difficult & demanding high adventure treks.

Participants . . .

Participants may be provisional and be assigned to a provisional Mason-Dixon Adventure crew or a crew could be made up of participants from one unit. The Mason-Dixon Adventure may be used as a Venturing Crew, Venture Patrol or Troop Leadership team building opportunity.

The Mason-Dixon Adventure is open to all 13-year-old and older Boy Scout and Venturing youth. We will always follow the BSA Guide to safe Scouting, including the guidelines pertaining to gender.

The Location & Duration . . .

The Mason-Dixon Adventure will be based out of Camp Horseshoe. Arriving on Sunday afternoon, participants will be assigned to a Crew guided by two staff members throughout the week.

Day one (Sunday) will include check-in, medical and swim checks,

After breakfast on Monday, the Crews begin the adventure with a gear shakedown as well as the beginning of instructional preparations.  Crews will build a raft and depart for the back country, not to return to the developed portions of Camp Horseshoe until Friday afternoon.

The Mason-Dixon Adventure ends back at Camp Horseshoe on Friday afternoon where Crews will return all equipment and supplies, before having an opportunity to relax and clean up. And then the celebrating begins!

A special Friday night gathering will commence to mark the successful completion of a week in the wilderness. Happy participants depart for home Saturday morning after breakfast.
